Always make sure a friend knows where you are, at what times and who you are with. Give them the contact name, telephone number and location.
Make sure the people you are with (i.e. the photographer) realise others know you are there.
When you have become a model, with years of experience, these basic rules are still essential.
Always have your mobile and cash for a taxi home
Keep your home address, telephone number and exact work location private. Contact should be via email or generalised work location i.e. London, Paris, Bristol etc. Don't even start modelling unless you can keep personal information private.
Make sure you are "comfortable" with what is expected of you -if not sort it out beforehand. Don't wait until the time arrives - the pressure will be on you, particularly if you have just become a model, and it will show if you do the work.
Be proud and confident of your modelling work. Don't do anything you cannot tell/show your friends/parents. Don't do something when you first become a model that could affect your long term career.
A simple written (fax or email) agreement about any modelling work - including time, place, contact, work involved, fee and expenses can go along way to making things absolutely clear and avoid any queries.
Transparent and clear agreements help you become a model without unecessary stress. Agreements must be in place before you start modelling.
Only work for people that will give you at least 2 references before you start modelling work for them.
The references will be from people they have previously worked with and will provide you with confidence. You must contact these references - it's normal practise as you will find out once you've done it a couple of times. If someone is not prepared to give you references do not work for them.
To become a model you must be on time - on the very rare occasion you are unavoidably late let those waiting for you know.
Have a clear understanding of what is required of you before you start modelling. Think it through by "imagining the experience step by step" beforehand you will think of most eventualities and requirements. Write down any points you need to remember.
As you become a model and repeat this process it will become natural to you.
Don't assume clothing will be provided - bring some change of clothes
Don't assume make up will be provided - bring some of your own.
To become a model you must be prepared.

Once you become a model to be really successful you need to increase your profile by networking. This means forever increasing the number of contacts you have who can lead to work and keeping these contacts up to date with your news. Networking leads to work so approach it positively and always be looking for new contacts and building on existing ones.
Keep adding and updating pictures right from the first day you start modelling. Ask for copies of photos on new shoots.
Recognise the assets that will help you become a model ie your face, your body shape, your hair and work at keeping them in good shape. Baggy clothes tell people you are hiding something.
With modern technology it's easy to have your own modelling website to help you become a model. It will have similar content to your portfolio which can easily be updated and won't cost a lot. If you need help with the website ask a friend or look in your local paper.
